Vasectomies do not really change the body aside from dealing with a vans deferens. Patients should not attempt to drive themselves home because this will only increase the amount of pain and discomfort to the surgical area.”
But this is not the only thing that can change with a vasectomy. “There is an increased chance of Granulomas and Epididymitis for men that return to strenuous jobs too soon after surgery. Granulomas are another potential side effect of a vasectomy. Sperm is prevented from reaching the scrotal tissues when the vas deferens is severed for a vasectomy. Sometimes a complication can arise where the sperm begin leaking into the scrotal tissues. A large lump or mass will form causing increased pain and swelling in the genital region. The entire area will be sensitive to temperature changes and any pressure.”
So, lumps and granulomas are likely to develop. “Normally Granulomas can be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs which will decrease the swelling and sensitivity of the area. Granulomas should respond to medications and subside within a few days to a week after treatment has begun.”
Sometimes, more extreme methods need to be taken, “In rare cases a reverse vasectomy must be performed because the leakage does not stop and the swelling becomes increasingly worse than before the procedure.”
There are other side effects to vasectomies. “Epididymitis is a potential side effect of a vasectomy. The epididymus is a tube that connects the vas deferens to the back side of each testicle. It is tightly coiled and very narrow. In a few cases the epididymus becomes inflamed because of the vasectomy surgery . The area becomes very tender and causes additional pain for the patient. Some doctors will recommend an anti-inflammatory drug to help with Epididymitis. The swelling should subside in approximately one week after the surgery without any major complications.”
Furthermore, there are infections that take place after a vasectomy. “Abscesses following a vasectomy are very rare but can happen. An abscess is typically the result of a post-operative infection at the surgical site. Antibiotics are needed to treat abscesses. If the abscess is left untreated it can fill with fluid and may have to be drained.”
