If you’re reading this article because you think that you may be anorexic, the best thing to do is to talk to your health care provider about it. Even if you have none of these issues or just one of them, you could still be anorexic or be on the verge of becoming anorexic. You must seek professional help now to avoid worse problems in the future.
- You Get Anxious around Mealtimes – If you notice that you’re trying to lose weight and mealtimes make you super-moody and anxious even if you’re trying to plan healthily, this could develop into a bigger problem.
- You Avoid Social Activity Due to Food – Are you turning down more social activities because you don’t want to be tempted by all the food that is around? Many anorexics become experts at hiding their eating and not eating, but early on, they often isolate and avoid the situation entirely.
- You Talk Obsessively about Diet, Food, and Eating “Right” – If you’re a diet guru, this is different, but if you’re an average person, your life should be about much more than eating and your diet. Eating a healthy diet really is not all-consuming and can be done easily and inexpensively.
- You Get Anxious If You Cannot Exercise – If you create a habit to work out every day, that’s great, but if you become overly anxious due to having to miss one session, that is a sign that something is out of whack. This is especially true if you are overexerting. It’s not good for the average person to exercise at the level of an athlete every single day.
- You Obsessively Weigh Yourself – Anorexics needs to weigh themselves regularly when they are in treatment to ensure they are gaining or staying where they need to for health. However, if you are weighing yourself every day or even more than once a day, this can lead to a serious problem.
- You Like to Have Complete Control Over Your Food – If you get anxious any time anyone else is in control of the food at home, during a date or a party, that is a sign that you may be developing an eating disorder.
- You Only Want to Eat Alone – If you find that you are only eating when alone and not enjoying a meal with friends or family, this is a huge sign of an eating disorder.
- You Are Ritualizing Mealtime – Some anorexic people turn meals into rituals. They use the same bowl, the same spoon, cutting the food in a particular way and want to sit in the same spot when eating. Some will also only eat the same thing each time too.
- You Have Low Energy – If you’re not eating enough calories and nutrition, it will show in your energy levels. If you are not feeling any energy about anything, you may have an eating disorder that has affected your health through a lack of vitamin and other nutrient levels.
- You’re Anxious or Depressed – Sometimes, people are anxious and depressed before they realize they have an eating disorder, but others become anxious and depressed after their eating disorder is solidified. Due to the lack of nutrition, they can even damage their brains.
- You Self-Harm – If you participate in any type of self-harming activity like cutting, for example, and you are having anxiety about food, you may be developing anorexia.

As you read through these signs, remember that you may have totally different symptoms. If you are having issues eating, even if you don’t think you’re doing it yourself, you may be anorexic. For example, if you get nauseated at the thought of food and throw up after every meal, you may have a real health condition and not anorexia, but it might also be anorexia. Everyone presents slightly differently. The essential factor is getting professional help.
